Teaching Fellowships
Since 2008 the African Studies Association has funded a programme of teaching fellowships. The teaching fellowships enable a postdoctoral UK scholar to work at an African University for up to six months and to teach research skills and substantive courses. Teaching fellowships provide valuable opportunities for those finishing degrees in the UK and also enable the exchange of the latest research and research skills. This includes exchange of skills on research methods and those required for publication in international journals.
Such fellowships enable early career scholars to stay involved in the field, to continue working in an academic environment, to gain teaching experience and to develop their networks and, possibly, collaborative projects. The fellowships have been able to deliver knowledge transfer between UK graduates and colleagues at African Universities and to increase employment opportunities for the graduates of the UK Universities involved. Justina Dugbazah wrote of the fellowship in her final report; The ASAUK teaching fellowship has been a tremendous experience for me. It has offered me an international teaching experience within a multi-cultural team.
In total six teaching fellowships were funded for 2008-10;
- Justina Dugbazah, to teach at the University of Legon Ghana.
- Patricia Kingori, to teach at the University of Maseno Kenya.
- Izabela Orlowska, to teach at the University of Addis Ababa Ethiopia.
- Kelly Rosenthal, to teach at Fort Hare University, South Africa.
- Marie Gibert, to teach at the Universit Cheikh Anta Diop Senegal
- Winnie Eckardt to teach at the National University of Rwanda.
