Music: Lekan Babalola’s Sacred Funk Project

We are very proud to have twice Grammy award winning Nigerian percussionist Lekan Babalola perform with his Sacred Funk Project during the Conference BBQ at The Duck and Scholar!

Lekan Babalola is well known for his innovative musical style, using his native Yoruba tongue infused with traditional music, Afrobeat and funky dance overtones. He started his career playing in the Yoruba Christian Church owned by his father. He also received a cultural and political apprenticeship from the late Fela Kuti.

Lekan came to Britain in 1980 and in 1995 he founded the Ifa-Yoruba Contemporary Arts Trust, a UK based registered charity trust committed to fostering the development of Yoruba arts and culture.

In 2006 he was awarded his first Grammy for performances on the late Ali Farka Toure’s album ‘In the Heart of the Moon’. He was awarded a second Grammy in 2009 for his work as Associate Producer on the American jazz diva Cassandra Wilson’s album ‘Loverly’.

Make sure you register for the Conference BBQ on Tuesday 11 September because this is a performance you do not want to miss!
