ASAUK Statement on Strike Action
The African Studies Association UK (ASAUK) expresses full support to its members currently undertaking industrial action. We are concerned that increased casualisation, longstanding race and gender pay gaps, and worsening pension entitlements will have a negative impact on our field. Attracting and retaining the academics and professional services colleagues on whom African Studies teaching and research relies will become more difficult. We know that deteriorating working conditions and terms of employment have disproportionately adverse effects on women, on early career colleagues and on Black and Minority Ethnic academics, all of whom we represent. This has a direct bearing on our intellectual mission of supporting world-leading Africa-related teaching and research. We call on Universities to end casualisation, address gender and race pay gaps, and commit to fair pay and workloads.
